Tech Patents, Who Has More?

From June 2015, Google Has Outpaced Both Apple and Microsoft.

Google in now the second company for number of parents granted each month. Surprisingly, only 5 years ago, it still stood on the bottom ranks, among big tech giants, with new patents granted at about the same pace as Yahoo.

From July 2014, Google seems to have definitely surpassed Apple, and now it has grown to outpace Microsoft as well.

Samsung, has been holding the record of being granted the highest number of patents each month. In July 2015, 769 new patents were assigned to Samsung. Google "only" had 246, and Apple 172.

Since 2011, Google is the company whose number of granted patents has been growing at the fastest rate. It surpassed Apple in 2014 and Microsoft in 2015.

This year, Google has already been granted 1,918 new patents. A few more than those assigned to Apple and Amazon combined.

This feat is probably related to the fact that, from 2012, Microsoft has filed less and less patent applications, reaching an all-time low in 2015. On the other hand, Google's inventors have managed to file more patent applications in these first 7 months of 2015 than in the whole 2014.

While Google's patent growth-spur is remarkable, the company is still far from reaching Samsung Electronics' numbers. The Korean giant was assigned more patents in 2014 than Google got in 2014 and 2015 combined. In fact, in 2014 Samsung became the owner of almost 9,000 new patents. This is more than those granted to either Yahoo, Amazon, Apple, or Google for the whole 2006-2013 period!

Since January 2006, Samsung has become the owner of 58K new patents. Microsoft has less than half. And both Apple and Google stop below 10K.

In other terms, Samsung currently owns 56% of all the US patents that the USPTO assigned to either Samsung, Microsoft, Apple, Google or Yahoo since 2006.
